The aid package promised to Central America after the devastation of theregion by Hurricane Mitch is inadequate to prevent the spread of disease and famine, a doctor working on a medical relief programme in the flood zone claimed last week.
Dr Nadine Ezard, a public health consultant from Melbourne, said to the BMJ last week: “We are now into the third week of this crisis, and we are getting a sense that the international response has not been adequate. People have survived the hurricane and flood, but unless we are able to get systems in place to respond to outbreaks of disease they will be facing epidemic diseases as well.”
