Student electives may form an important bridge between undergraduate experience and eventual success in the specialty. A recent letter in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (1998;102:588) points out that the relationship is symbiotic: the student gains a mentor, and the surgeon gets a computer literate assistant who increases academic productivity by helping with data entry and case note reviews.
