Recent concern in Britain has centered round the relative unpopularity of an academic career, and in America there are similar concerns. A study (Academic Medicine 1998;73:790-3) in a community-based medical school in the United States found that academic scores were not useful predictors of whether doctors eventually joined the faculty. Previous studies have found such a correlation; the difference may reflect the crosssectional design of the new study or the selection policy of the school.
