Patients with schizophrenia living in the community eat badly

BMJ 1998; 317 doi: (Published 19 September 1998) Cite this as: BMJ 1998;317:d

Most people with schizophrenia now live in the community, yet they die early, especially from cardiovascular disease. To assess whether a bad diet might contribute to this McCreadie et al studied 30 patients living in the community and responsible for their own domestic affairs and 30 healthy controls (p 784). Most of the patients smoked and were overweight and their diet was significantly poorer (less energy, fibre, and fruit) than that of the controls, with high intakes of saturated fat.
