Joseph Rahamim, the surgeon at the centre of concerns raised by Channel 4News about his qualifications, resumed work this week after a preliminary investigation by Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust found that his death rates were comparable to national figures.
The trust set up the internal investigation after Channel 4 News revealed that Mr Rahamim, consultant thoracic surgeon at Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, was unaccredited and was the only thoracic surgeon in the country with no postgraduate surgical qualification (1 August, 297). This was not a barrier to appointment as a consultant at the time of his appointment in 1992.
