Burnout - the exhaustion of physical or emotional strength as a result of prolonged stress or frustration - is an illness that can affect any human services professional, but doctors are particularly at risk. A review in Occupational Medicine (1998;48:237-50) concludes that prevention depends on increasing the wider educational aspects of the job (as opposed to just training), redesigning jobs to enrich and refresh individuals and increase their autonomy, and to recognise the spirituality of work - the sharing of values, morality, ethics and beliefs.
