Self regulation of doctors must work locally

    Leaders of the medical profession in Britain have resolved to work towards a culture of openness and critical self appraisal among doctors which should make whistle blowing obsolete.

    In its NHS white paper for England, The New NHS, the government called on the medical profession to ensure that effective local arrangements were in place which “build on and strengthen the existing systems of professional self regulation and the principles of corporate governance.” The BMA, the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, and postgraduate and undergraduate deans took up the challenge …
