EU will ban tobacco adverts from 2001

    A nine year campaign to ban tobacco advertising and sponsorship within the European Union is nearing its end. The necessary legislation, which will start to come into force in June 2001, is due to be approved by the European parliament on 12 May. Britain's health secretary, Frank Dobson, welcomed the move.
