Registration of trials should be required by editors and registering agencies

    Editor—Both the editorial by Naylor and the paper by Stern and Simes propose the prospective registration of clinical trials.1 2 Such registration would not only avoid publication bias but also provide the basis for evaluating the final conclusions of trials in the light of the original hypothesis and design.

    It is now possible to register cardiovascular clinical trials on the internet in the Cardio-Vascular Clinical Trials Forum (http://biomednet.com/cvctforum). As Boissel et al and Friedman point out in our introductory issue (soon to be available online in the forum), there are potential difficulties with such registries.
