The Liberal Democrats has issued a press release showing that the NHS is short of 1600 hospital doctors, over 8000 nurses, and nearly 1000 GPs. The party says that cancelled operations rose by 5% in the period April to September 1997. The party has called for an increase in the number of medical and nursing students and the public funding to pay for them; incentives for medical students to stay in the NHS; and incentives for students to go into nursing.
