Francisco Javier Arroyo-Vacas

Senior house officer in ophthalmology Queen Margaret Hospital, Dunfermline (b Madrid 1967; q Zaragoza), d 14 September 1997. He moved to Britain in 1993, holding hospital house jobs and spending some time in general practice in Barrow-in-Furness. He was chosen out of 70 candidates to hold his recent rotation posts through the Edinburgh teaching hospitals. His interests included languages, music, literature, and astronomy. His wife, Kashfi, died of cancer earlier this year. [Luis Cebrian]

Philip Hedley Brakenbury

Consultant in charge accident and emergency department Middlesborough General Hospital 1981–94 (b Reading 1941; q Cambridge/St Bartholomew's 1966; FRCSE, founder FAEM), d 22 August 1997. He held various training posts in Britain, and also worked in Methodist hospitals in both Sierra Leone and Fiji, where he saved the hospital from bankruptcy, restarted the nursing school, and worked as a lay preacher. He served on the council of the British Association for Accident and Emergency Medicine, also representing it on many national committees, and was an enthusiastic teacher as a divisional surgeon to the St John Ambulance Brigade.
