Several of my good friends and colleagues have been diagnosed with chronic illnesses over the past few years. Among other things, their maladies include cancer, heart disease, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and permanent injury sustained in accidents. As the world's population continues to age and medical science is able to cure acute illnesses and manage chronic diseases, I am likely to be faced with more friends with a condition that is unlikely to be fatal but will never go away completely …
