There are a number of syndromes in clinical medicine for which science cannot yet offer a causal explanation, such as the chronic fatigue syndrome. Such syndromes are especially vulnerable for an “alternative” approach. In these instances, chemical factors from the environment are often believed by lay people to be a cause for these diseases, even though there is no scientific evidence for such a relation.
