American biochemist wins Nobel prize: Professor Stanley Prusiner from the University of California in San Francisco won this year's Nobel prize for medicine for his discovery of prions, thought to be the infectious agent in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease. His research could lead to new treatments for dementia related diseases, including Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases
