The weekly working hours of thousands of doctors in training could be reduced under plans being considered by the European Commission.
The commission is currently canvassing the degree of support for extending existing European Union rules that stipulate a maximum 48 hour week to the small group of professions that was originally excluded from the legislation when it was adopted in 1993.
