This BMJ contains important information for all those who look after children. Two authors from Norway and Finland have been looking critically at the evidence for the widespread belief that asthma is becoming commoner in industrialised countries, particularly among children (p 1795). They included in their study only repeated cross sectional studies that used the same definitions of variables, wording of questions, and methods of data collection on samples of children and young adults in the same geographical area.
