Things getting better as you move up the career ladder has been (arguably) a prime motivation for a generation of junior doctors. But a paper in the latest edition of Health Trends (1997;28:132-4) shows little change in job satisfaction and markers of mental and physical ill health with increasing seniority in a cohort study of junior doctors. But the study only has data on a sample of house officers turned senior house officers, so it is still possible that entering higher grades may show a different effect.
