The median salary of NHS Trust chief executives increased by 5.6% to £65 250 in 1996 according to a survey conducted by NHS Personnel, an NHS owned consultancy that provides human resource management support and development. Around three quarters of chief executives also received lump sum bonuses (median £4 535). Another survey conducted by the Institute of Health Service Management found a median increase of only 2.5% (on a smaller sample) and argued that this figure is around £32 000 less than those who do comparable jobs in the private sector.
