The contracts of many staff grade doctors do not currently allow for on call work. This has led to exploitation as doctors are forced to accept contracts with on call work paid at lower rates. The NHS Executive has accepted the principle that the hour for hour rates on call should be the same as the staff grade rate during the day. It has also restated its commitment to the continuing professional development of doctors in the staff grade, including the flexibility of allowing staff grade doctors to re-enter specialist training in equal competition with senior house officers.
