The current law on maternity rights has been summarised in a report by the Labour Research Department. Its booklet covers the law and best practice on all aspects of maternity leave. From 1998 employees in all EU countries other than the UK will have a statutory right to apply for three months' parental leave. This can be taken up for three months at any time up to the 8th birthday of a child, though whether it will be paid will be a matter for individual states. Maternity rights-an LRD guide to the law and best practice is available from Labour Research Department booklets on 0171\t928 3649, price £2.85.
