Whistleblowers often face years of recrimination and ostracism; that such isolation is the reward for playing an essential role in a free and open society is unjust, yet the law in this area is ill defined. A welcome review of the legal issues surrounding whistleblowing is published in Industrial Relations Law Bulletin (IRS Services, 563, February 1997 p2-10), which scrutinises the public interest defence to breach of an employee's implied duty of confidentiality to his or her employer.
