Rapid responses are electronic comments to the editor. They enable our users
to debate issues raised in articles published on bmj.com. A rapid response
is first posted online. If you need the URL (web address) of an individual
response, simply click on the response headline and copy the URL from the
browser window. A proportion of responses will, after editing, be published
online and in the print journal as letters, which are indexed in PubMed.
Rapid responses are not indexed in PubMed and they are not journal articles.
The BMJ reserves the right to remove responses which are being
wilfully misrepresented as published articles or when it is brought to our
attention that a response spreads misinformation.
From March 2022, the word limit for rapid responses will be 600 words not
including references and author details. We will no longer post responses
that exceed this limit.
The word limit for letters selected from posted responses remains 300 words.
In researching the loss of Orgasmic Sensation after a Transurethral
Resection of the Prostate (TURP) I have been disappointed that very little
is in the literature. I have brought up the subject with my urologist
repeatedly and he shrugged his shouilders and said he had not heard of
this. He said it was never in a urology text he had used nor was it
presented when he was a urology resident(within the last 10 years). I had
3 turps in only 4 months and from the first one have had this sensation
loss. I was glad to find this article that confirmed my feeling (or lack
there of) was not just in my head. THis subject needs to be addressed by
surgeons who do these operations so they can tell patients what they MIGHT
experience. I had already experienced retrograde ejaculation from the
drug FLOMAX and although sensation was different, it was not so radically
different as now. If what I had before TURP orgasm-wise was a "10" at best
now it is only a 2 or a 3. I was only 56 when I had this surgery in 2006
and in good health except for the prostate problem. I have NOT had any ED
problems. I am 6 ft 4 in tall and 175 weight....This is NOT what I had
thought the next 20 or so years would be like sexually.
