One of the key changes to the consultants' distinction awards scheme was to make its procedures more transparent. The second annual guide to the scheme appeared recently, and has been distributed to all trusts and health authorities. It contains information on the organisation of the scheme, advice on nominations, and the procedures surrounding the five yearly review of each award. The awards can be withdrawn, but as a scheme of salary protection is in place, this only means that the salary is frozen until the consultant scale catches up. About 25% of consultants hold awards, which are pensionable, by the time of retirement.
