Record numbers of students are passing out of university- nearly a quarter of a million in 1994-5- but according to a survey in IRS Employment Review (Employee Development Bulletin Nov 1996;83:3-16) demand from employers is likely to remain constant. Median starting salaries for graduates in both public and private sectors are similar at £14,000-£15,000 progressing over the next two years to £16,000-£18,000. Two thirds of employers used psychometric testing in their recruitment processes, but not many found graduates through the Internet: only 6.6% used it, and none rated it their most effective medium.
