The demise of the regional health authorities had left public health trainees with no one to hold their contracts. Under new guidance issued by the NHS Executive, once a post has been approved by the postgraduate dean the contract will be held by a lead employer (generally a health authority) as the trainee rotates through training placements. Terms and conditions of service, disciplinary matters, and professional indeminity should be negotiated locally and made explicit in writing.
