A new working group has been set up to review the uses of identifiable patient information outside direct care and research.
The group will be chaired by Dame Fiona Caldicott, past president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, and will make recommendations and report in the spring of 1997. All routine transfers of information, such as contracting data, extracontractual referrals, items of service claims, disease management registers, and transfers to social services, will be scrutinised to see whether such transfers are justified.
