The concept of a consultant session should be abandoned, and the term notional half day substituted, according to a new model workload document jointly published by the BMA and the British Association of Dermatologists. Many operating or outpatient sessions that consultants do are longer than the three and a half hours of a notional half day, and other contractual obligations should be tailored to reflect this within annually reviewed job plans. Although the notes specifically discuss consultant workload within the context of dermatology, the points reviewed are in most cases applicable to consultants in any specialty. Model workload document for consultants in dermatology: general notes for guidance is available to BMA members from local offices.
