In June 1986, women being treated for breast cancer who were also attending the Bristol Cancer Help Centre for complementary therapies agreed to participate in a research project. The five-year study to compare their quality of life and survival with that of a control group of women receiving orthodox treatment only was funded by cancer research charities.
