The government has announced plans to provide 37 more paediatric intensive care beds throughout England. The health secretary, Mr Stephen Dorrell, said that up to 30 of these beds would be available in time for the coming winter. Another seven beds are planned for next financial year. In addition, a further 18 high dependency beds are proposed.
