It is not easy to write a contemporary history of a complicated topic like AIDS, not only because of the large amount of material available but also because much of the documentation is coloured by the ideas and background of the people concerned in the control of AIDS. Taking that into account, Virginia Berridge has done an excellent job. In her account of 14 years of policy making on AIDS in the United Kingdom she tries to stay with the facts and to interpret without making judgments.
