Question: Which arthropod borne flavivirus is endemic in Britain? Answer: Louping (or leaping) ill—so named because of the characteristic signs of encephalomyelitis that it causes in sheep—which has long been endemic in Scotland but which is now known to be present in many other parts of the British Isles. In addition to sheep, small mammals and the red grouse comprise its animal reservoir, and it is transmitted by Ixodid ticks, occasionally infecting humans who expose their flesh in sheep pastures.
