Notifications of meningococcal infections rose sharply in 1995, according to last week's Communicable Disease Report (vol 6, No 3). Over the previous four years the number of cases notified to the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys has been fairly steady at around 1400 cases a year, but more than 1800 cases are reported in the preliminary data for 1995.
