Committee's action will undermine further research and development

    EDITOR,--We deplore the failure of the Committee on Safety of Medicines and its chairman, Professor Michael Rawlins, to understand the issues raised by their hasty and ill considered advice to doctors not to prescribe oral contraceptives containing the progestogens desogestrel and gestodene.1 Rawlins claims that the committee has to take on the responsibilities of peer reviewers with regard to unpublished information.2 In this it presumes to act as both judge and jury, a single role that …
