At least 72 doctors in six states in the US charged more than $1m (£670000) each in 1992 for treating Medicare patients. The figures emerged in a series of recent articles in the Palm Beach Post. The newspaper's owners, Cox Newspapers, took legal action under the Freedom of Information Act and forced the Health Care Financing Administration to provide computerised records for the states where the chain owns newspapers.
