At least 1.3 million women in the world die of reproductive health problems each year, says a report from Population Action International, an American organisation. In Zaire a woman has a one in 16 lifetime risk of dying of complications of pregnancy, childbirth, or an unsafe abortion; by contrast, in Italy the risk is one in 17 361.
