The European Union should stop subsidising the production of alcohol and raise taxes to discourage drinking, says Eurocare, an alliance of 23 alcohol misuse agencies in the European Union. In a new report Eurocare argues that the economic burden of alcohol problems may cost Europe more than pounds sterling60bn a year when social and health costs are taken into account. It calls for taxes that make alcohol “pay its way.”
