Recent protests about unpleasant veal crate practices have given government ministers and others plenty of opportunity to make disparaging remarks about southern Europe's poor attitudes to animal welfare. Yet within such self righteousness, to which we are as a nation unusually prone, there lies a lacuna in our self awareness: we little realise that our disparagement of the southern Europeans on matters animal is mirrored by an equivalent disparagement by them of us with regard to matters human.
