When a subject is rapidly changing, a book based on a conference can be a good way of defining the “state of the art.” This is very much what Professional and Managerial Aspects of Clinical Audit does, and successive sections provide the current views on audit of purchasers and providers, the nine royal colleges, information technologists, and managers. The picture is comprehensive and clear—and depressing. If this is the offering of the best, what hope for the rest of us?
