France: one in five prisoners rejects voluntary HIV test

The latest survey indicates that 2.8% of the French penal population is infected with HIV. Carried out last

July, it established that at least1620 people out of a total of 57 000 were HIV positive, and 221 of them had clinical symptoms of AIDS. The survey is known to underestimate the prevalence of HIV infection because testing is carried out on a voluntary and anonymous basis and one in five prisoners refused to be tested.
