Israel: Government endorses back to sleep policy

The Israeli ministry of health has officially accepted and endorsed the policy of laying babies on their backs or sides to reduce the incidence of the sudden infant death syndrome. Dr Alex Levinthal, head of the ministry's public health department, said: “We believe that this state policy will reduce the number of crib deaths, which even prior to it has been extraordinarily low—and we don't know why.”
The new guidelines have been recommended for about a year in all the country's obstetrics departments and family health centres. Although Israeli doctors and nurses are somewhat conservative, almost all have agreed to promote the supine or side positions, even though they previously offered the opposite …
