Medical students are generally thought, with reason, to be brighter than average. Whether they are also well informed and widely read was put to the test on University Challenge, when three fourth year medics and their dentist captain from King's College School of Medicine and Dentistry faced a team from the University of Lampeter, Wales.

Things started poorly for King's when a wrong interruption gave them an ignominious opening score of minus 5. The popular prejudice looked like being confirmed: medics know nothing but behave as if they know everything. In life they often get away with it; here, they were caught out. …
