    One furtive glance on a Sunday morning and I've done with the “style” pages. The photographs are peculiar, the prices silly, much of the text baffling.

    But then fashion itself is uncanny. Several years ago there was a trend in suits, double breasted ones supplanting the single breasted sort. Around that time I met someone for lunch and noticed that he had become double breasted. By chance we met twice more over the next fortnight and again he was wearing double breasted jackets. After a lifetime of single breasted suits, he had now purchased at least three new, different expensive suits with an additional swathe of material.
