Performing abortions in the US is becoming more dangerous. On 29 July a doctor was shot dead, along with his security escort, outside an abortion clinic in Pensacola, Florida. It was the second murder of a doctor who performed abortions in that city in 17 months.
Police reports said that the doctor, Dr John B Britton, aged 69, arrived by plane in Pensacola on the morning of the shooting. He was met by James and June Barrett, elderly volunteer escorts who accompany doctors through the lines of protesters outside the abortion clinic.
