An investigation into the possible illegal origin of organs for transplantation, particularly corneas, has been prompted in France by a letter of protest from a dozen doctors to the Conseil de 1‘Ordre des Medecins, the French medical association. The letter points out that more than 1000 public hospital patients are waiting for corneal transplants, while some are treated in private clinics that purchase corneas from foreign banks.
