EDITOR, - The anguish felt by benefactors when their gift is apparently spurned is understandable, but it would be disastrous if potential benefactors were discouraged by the current furore about funding hospital building in south London.1 Charitable money has become essential to services and research.
People like to see something for their money; thus equipment is easy to fund, especially if it has to do with hearts, children, or cancer. Public collections for the construction of buildings have a long history, as inscriptions on many hospitals testify. …
