EDITOR, - My duties as medical director of Grampian Healthcare NHS Trust, the largest and most diverse trust in Scotland, accord closely with those described by the BMA's committee for public health medicine and community health and include the lead role for disciplinary procedures for medical staff.1 I attend meetings of the trust medical advisory committee as of right but as a non-voting member. The committee's chairperson continues to be elected from among the consultants in the trust.
I firmly believe, however, that to be successful a medical director must have clinical credibility among medical colleagues. This implies a continuing clinical commitment (in my case, four sessions a week in geriatric orthopaedic rehabilitation) and, perhaps more importantly, that the medical director should be appointed from the …
