Peptic ulcers should be treated by a combination of acid reducing drugs and antimicrobial therapy, said a 14 member consensus panel convened by the National Institutes of Health in the United States last week. The panel confirmed a strong causal link between infection with Helicobacter pylori and peptic ulcers and gastritis. No evidence was found for a link between H pylori infection and “non-ulcer dyspepsia.”
