I am told that the Soundings page is fifth in the BMJ's popularity rankings behind editorials, Minerva, news, and Obituary and ahead of anything that could be classified as a serious scientific article. With 35 contributions under my belt, I have amassed a thick file of correspondence and a selection of embarrassing cuttings showing me pilloried and - very occasionally - applauded by the popular press.
