David Weatherall
b 1933, regius professor of medicine, Oxford

John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, 01/04/96
Unassuming and generous in spirit, David Weatherall's only defect is the unusual one for a doctor of an addiction to his pipe. His outstanding contribution has been to bring the modern science of molecular biology to the bedside, particularly in the study of blood diseases, in which he specialises. Unlike so many who are concerned only with their research, Weatherall is that rare individual who is also an excellent clinician and teacher, as well as somebody who has thought deeply about the place of medicine and doctors in society as a whole. Through his work as senior editor of the Oxford Textbook of Medicine his influence has extended far beyond Britain.
