At one time Sheila Sherlock's department was housed on the top of the old Royal Free Hospital. Nevertheless, her international reputation as a liver specialist was such that all overseas visitors made their pilgrimage to what a French specialist called "ce département sur les toits" to see the world's best known hepatologist. The author of a classic textbook on liver disease, now in its ninth edition, she has been an outstanding teacher, with many of her former students heading departments throughout the world. |
